Online Roundtable Hosting the Online Roundtable “Atypical Architecture Activities: Plastics, Plastics, and Plastics” in Archipelago’s “Architecture and Media” Series

Plastic up !  This roundtable, “Atypical Architecture Activities: Plastics, Plastics, and Plastics,” gathers emerging architects and designers from the Plastic Up! exhibition to explore plastic from three intertwined perspectives: as a material, as a medium shaping human experience, and as a metaphor for contemporary society. 

Framing their work as “atypical architectural activities,” the conversation looks beyond conventional building projects to include installations, exhibitions, community engagement, and research-driven practice. Using their exhibited works as a starting point, the speakers share how they experiment with tools, formats, and narratives to critically reflect on our relationship with plastic today. Held on the occasion of the exhibition’s closing, the event serves both as a public report on the everyday practice of a younger generation of designers and as an open invitation to rethink what architectural work can be.

 On June 4th, 2022, Ji Shi, a 2017 recipient of the Emerging Curators Project by Power Station of Art (PSA), Shanghai, joined an online conversation with guests Xia Murong and Zhu Yimeng to explore curating from an architect’s point of view. 

Taking David Bowie’s “Thru’ These Architects Eyes” as a playful reference, the talk reflects on how architects use space as a medium, through circulation, atmosphere, and spatial installations, while also acknowledging the limits and misunderstandings of architect-led curating. Rather than a formal lecture, the event is framed as an informal “tea-time” exchange of experiences and methods.

Clip-clip  In this interview, Ji shared how his cultural background shaped his practice as an architect working at the intersection of digital tools, physical space, and “architectural robots.” He talks about treating buildings as giant robots with their own sensing and actuation systems, and reflects on curating the interactive exhibition “HASHTAG” at Power Station of Art in Shanghai to explore connections between the digital world and physical space. 

Ji also discusses his ongoing research on “air” in relation to pollution and COVID-19, using architecture as a tool to rethink air control at building and urban scales. Finally, he emphasizes “community” as shared values rather than shared location, encouraging young designers to share their work, be patient, and build resilience.

This panel, “New Hybridities: Young Chinese Designers”  by DigitalFUTURES, brings together a group of highly talented young Chinese artists and architects. 

Coming from a range of architectural backgrounds, and with experience of both the East and West, these individuals avidly investigate the cutting edge of space-making, at the intersection between the digital and the physical, if not fully digital. Using tools and media such as scanning, simulation, animation, gaming and VR, they project the real onto the virtual and the virtual onto the real, expanding the imagination of the viewer through the immersive experience of their entanglement.
