In this interview, Ji shared how his cultural background shaped his practice as an architect working at the intersection of digital tools, physical space, and “architectural robots.” He talks about treating buildings as giant robots with their own sensing and actuation systems, and reflects on curating the interactive exhibition “HASHTAG” at Power Station of Art in Shanghai to explore connections between the digital world and physical space.

Ji also discusses his ongoing research on “air” in relation to pollution and COVID-19, using architecture as a tool to rethink air control at building and urban scales. Finally, he emphasizes “community” as shared values rather than shared location, encouraging young designers to share their work, be patient, and build resilience.
