Butterfly

Urban Renewal
Changning, Shanghai, China
Competition, 2024

The Butterfly project adopts the concept of “Cloud Wing,” drawing on the imagery of wings in motion. Six wing-like prefabricated perforated canopy panels break down the mass of the street-corner building, creating a lighter and more distinctive corner presence. In its structural language, the cantilevered wings reduce the visual weight of the industrial building; as a technical strategy, photovoltaic panels are installed on the roof at a 31.5° tilt and concealed behind the wings; at the ground level, gabion walls and vertical greenery soften the site boundaries, echoing the magnolia-lined streetscape of Yingbin 3rd Road.
